Introduction – The Completion of the Trilogy.
THIRD PART OF THE TRILOGYTITLE:
The Victory of Christ and the Resurrection of the Soul.
Introduction – The Completion of the Trilogy.
In the two previous homilies we highlighted two foundational truths:
• In the first part, that the Church of Christ is undefeated, no matter how fiercely she is attacked, for her foundation is the Incarnation and Divine Grace.
• In the second part, that the word of the Lord is fire, and whoever rejects it draws upon himself a judgment more fearful than that of Sodom—not as a threat, but as a call to life.
Now, in this third and final part,
our word ascends to its summit:
the Victory of Christ and the Resurrection of the soul.
For if the Church is undefeated,
and if the word of the Lord is fire,
then the Resurrection is the final assurance that the fear of the world has no power over the soul that lives in Christ.**
A. The World Fears Death;
The Christian Has Already Conquered It**
We live in a world paralyzed by the fear of death.
Modern man, terrified by wars, uncertainty, threats, and the artificial power of the mighty, behaves as though this present life is the whole of existence.
And yet, the greatest truth of History remains ever‑alive:
death has been defeated; abolished; it no longer has the last word.
No matter how much human schemes sow despair,
the Orthodox Church proclaims the victory of Christ.
Our hope does not rest on geopolitical plans,
nor on human authorities,
but on the word of the Lord:
“Without Me you can do nothing.”
And on the Resurrection, which overturns all things.
1. The Abolition of Death.
St. John Chrysostom — Paschal Homily.
“Let no one fear death, for the death of the Savior has set us free.
He who descended into Hades has plundered Hades…
Christ is risen, and life reigns.
”Interpretation:
The Christian is not terrified by the threats of the world,
for the greatest enemy—death—has already been crushed.
The Resurrection is not a symbol; it is a power that transforms existence.
2. The Peace That Transforms the World.
St. Seraphim of Sarov.
“Acquire the peace of God within your heart,
and thousands around you will be saved.
”Interpretation:
True change does not begin with ideologies,
but with inner purification.
When the soul is reconciled with God,
the grace that flows from it saves those around it.
3. The Mind as a Steady Rudder
St. Basil the Great
“Become the helmsman of your own thoughts;
if the sea of worldly cares is stirred,
fix your gaze upon the Lord.
”Interpretation:
The soul that looks to Christ does not sink.
No matter how the world is shaken,
the Christian keeps the rudder of his mind steady, turning his gaze toward the Lord.
C. The Hope That Does Not Die.
The solution to the impasses of our age
is not escape, nor compromise with fear.
The solution is living participation in the victory of the Resurrection.
When man realizes
that Christ is the Conqueror of corruption,
the heart is freed from anxiety.
The Christian stands upright,
becomes light in the darkness,
loves without conditions,
and keeps the rudder of his soul firm,
knowing that the light of the Resurrection
always scatters the darkness.
D. Conclusion — The Resurrection Word.
The Church does not live by fear;
she lives by the Resurrection.
The soul does not live by anxiety;
it lives by hope.
And as St. John Chrysostom proclaims:
“Christ is risen, and life reigns.
”This is our victory.
This is our freedom.
This is the resurrection of the soul.
