When Knowledge is Separated from Truth.
Brothers and Sisters,
Today the world faces dead ends: poverty, sickness, alienation, fear, lockdowns, and manifold crises; and within these conditions, human judgment and discernment are lost.
Yet, God does not leave man without light.
1. Julian the Apostate and the Deception of Knowledge.
Julian boasted:
"I have read, I have understood, I have rejected."
But Saint Basil the Great responds:
"You have read, but you have not understood; for if you had understood, you would not have rejected."
(Letter 27, On Theology)
He teaches that reading does not mean understanding, and understanding does not mean rejecting.
Knowledge without humility becomes hubris; and when the world strays from truth, societies become disordered, and children are left without light.
Saint Gregory the Theologian writes:
"Not all knowledge enlightens;
some knowledge inflates,
but that which is in God humbles."
(Letter 27, On Theology)
Knowledge that is ignorant, without Grace, does not save; it corrupts.
2. The World and the Rejection of Christ.
Today many say:
"We have studied it; it does not convince us."
Saint John Chrysostom answers:
"It is not the weakness of truth that repels, but the strength of truth that convicts." (Homily on John)
In other words, we do not reject Christ because the truth is weak, but because we do not wish to repent.
Repentance is the door to life;
refusal to repent becomes the gateway to calamities.
3. Education and the Society of Children.
Saint Athanasius the Great says:
"There is no knowledge of God without the purification of the heart."
(Against the Arians)
Education is not only knowledge; it is heart, discernment, and life.
If children grow up without truth, society becomes distorted; youth becomes alienated, without light.
4. A Word to Parents.
"Parents, let us not hide behind illusions."
Do not shift the need and responsibility for your children onto blind systems.
Children are ours, and the truth and faith that develop within them weigh upon us first.
Our Lord Jesus Christ says:
"You are the light of the world;
a city set on a hill cannot be hidden.
Nor do they light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on the lampstand, and it gives light to all in the house, that it may shine before men, that they may see your good works and glorify your Father who is in heaven."
(Matthew 5:14-16)
We learn three great lessons:
Children learn from the light of their parents.
The way we live, the values we defend, the truth we pursue, is the lantern in which children mirror their souls.
Light and action are united; it is not enough to speak words; the light must become deeds.
Saint Basil the Great says:
"Education without virtue is a weapon for the wicked."
(To the Youth)
Without character, knowledge kills; without God, education becomes the destruction of the souls of children.
We must exercise discernment and faith.
5. A Word to the Clergy.
If we do not speak, the void will be filled by deception.
Yet, within the services, the grace of God acts, which makes the faithful great and prevents the evil spirit from overwhelming the heart, as happened with Saint Basil the Great;
in contrast, deception and false knowledge overwhelm Julian, as they do our children today.
6. The Final Word of the Lord.
"Do not think that I have come to destroy the Law…
whoever does and teaches it, he shall be called great in the kingdom of heaven." (Matthew 5:17-19)
The greatness of life is determined by faithful application and teaching of the truth, not merely by formal acts or good intentions.
Parents, people, clergy, youth:
If the word does not awaken concern for truth, it is mere rhetoric.
Children do not need more information; they need light, measure, and truth.
These are not given freely; they must be claimed.
Amen.
